  • The Sheridan County YMCA is hiring new team members and will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 after its annual maintenance closure. The job openings offer flexible schedules, cross-training opportunities, subsidized day care and free memberships—needed certifications will be provided.  Sheridan Media
  • Gerry Spence— the famed trial attorney and proud Wyoming native raised in Sheridan— died Wednesday at age 96 in his Montecito home, leaving behind a legacy of landmark cases and dedicated mentorship of young lawyers. His achievements in championing the underdog and shaping legal practice have made a lasting mark on the legal community.  Cowboy State Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Season tickets are on sale for $325 at the WYO Performing Arts and Education Center for the 2025 to 2026 season featuring the Center Stage Series, which opens with the Dan Tyminski Band on Sept. 20—fall shows include Dallas String Quartet on Sept. 25, Huntley on Sept. 27, and Villalobos Brothers on Nov. 1 while holiday and new year events feature Suzy Bogguss on Dec. 7 and Repertory Dance Theatre on Feb. 6.  Sheridan Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the August 13 board meeting, the SCSD#3 board heard an audit report showing the district was in full compliance and praised staff for finishing the audit in less than two days—while presentations on the new House System excited students. The board approved the Sheridan Library Partnership with plans for weekly book rotations and an info kiosk, and it also backed policies on personal electronic devices, concealed carry and the student handbook for 2025-2026.  Sheridan Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over the weekend a male black bear was euthanized at the Black Canyon campground in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area after it damaged a camper’s tent and mattress and ignored repeated hazing attempts—staff said that removing the animal was necessary to protect visitors. The campground has since reopened with increased patrols through Labor Day to ensure safety.  City of Sheridan

  • First Lady Jennie Gordon’s Wyoming Hunger Initiative allocated $152,891 in infrastructure grants to 47 anti-hunger organizations statewide — the funds raised from the Hearts for Hunger event and the Hunger Champions Circle helped boost efforts to fight food insecurity.  Wyoming News Now
  • Governor Mark Gordon announced that Wyoming joined 10 other states in filing an amicus brief to support cattle ranchers who challenged manufacturers falsely labeling foreign-sourced beef as a Product of USA—South Dakota’s court ruling favored the ranchers and an appeal to the Eighth Circuit will follow.  Sheridan Media
  • Sheridan Police Chief Travis Koltiska joined Public Pulse to share safety tips for kids walking to school today—he advised families to walk new routes together, use marked crossings, and wear bright or reflective clothing when light is low.  Sheridan Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mountain Health Co-Op told its members Wednesday that it will stop covering Wyoming residents by the end of the year because rural care costs have become too high. The change leaves only United Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield in the exchange — a reduction in competition that may lead to higher rates for consumers.  Cowboy State Daily
