Good morning, Sheridan. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 10th of August.
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will hold a women-only hunter education course in Sheridan at The Hub on Smith Street on Friday, August 22nd from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students must attend every session, pass a final test to earn a certificate, and pay a total of $15 while those 12 and under need a guardian. - ➤ Sheridan College now manages the Agripark Building and has added 40 horse stalls for its 50-member rodeo team—this expansion will reduce public events as the college prioritizes team practice time. The college will decide which events remain open to the public while scheduling its annual rodeo on September 26th–28th and the season opener in Chadron on September 5th–7th. Sheridan Media
- ➤ School in SCSD#1 will start on Monday, August 18 as classes end in May, Dr. Jeff Jones said. Enrollment is up each year although the district hired fewer new teachers and faces housing challenges (about half of staff lives in Sheridan) and did not add new special ed staff (a sign of strong current staffing). - ➤ Federal funding for Wyoming after-school programs was frozen in July but was restored on July 18, easing worries for children and their families statewide—this move secured aid for more than 6,000 kids across 79 sites including Lights On! Lander. Local advocates and state officials say the renewed 21st CCLC funds will help guide safe, hands-on care and support working families as schools plan ahead. Casper Star-Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Sheridan Community Land Trust is hosting a stream restoration event at the Big Goose Natural Area on Wednesday, August 13 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Volunteers will work with Steady Stream Hydrology experts to collect data to guide future efforts — no experience is needed. Sheridan Media
