Good morning, Sheridan. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 7th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On August 4th, young stockgrowers at the Sheridan County Youth Livestock Sale auctioned off their animals to fund more stock, college, or other ventures. The event raised nearly $684-thousand from 194 lots—buyers spent $65-thousand more than last year despite selling 24 fewer animals.  Sheridan Media
  • Sheridan Community Land Trust is leading a 0.75-mile walking tour along Big Goose Creek on Tuesday, August 12 at 10:00 a.m. and again on August 19 at 10:30 a.m., with participants meeting at The Hub on Smith (the tours are free and visitors are advised to bring water and dress for the weather).  Sheridan Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • On August 2, Fort Phil Kearny held its annual Wagon Box Anniversary Program near the old fight site where historian Donovin Sprague recounted the 1867 battle and a demonstration by local veterans showed how newer rifles helped soldiers fight back—highlighting a long history of conflict and union between Native groups and soldiers.  City of Sheridan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SCSD#2 Board of Trustees met on August 4 to discuss the back-to-school timeline, upcoming firearms training and changes to the concealed firearms policy including an amendment to exempt lockbox costs from training fees. Superintendent Scott Stults said staff and new teachers will work extra days before students return on August 26 while community member Melinda Abbott called for more acknowledgment of support staff and the board voted to remove Court of Silver Flame from the library.  City of Sheridan

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sheridan County Commissioners awarded a contract to realign Taxiway A and expand the general aviation apron to Oftedal Construction — which had the lowest bid at nearly $9.5 million after Airport Manager Robert Gill shared his recommendations.  Sheridan Media
  • A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reconsider wolf policies in Wyoming and other states—a ruling that could lead to relisting wolves as endangered and end state hunting and trapping. Environmental and animal welfare groups filed the lawsuit after their petition was denied—local officials and backcountry guides worry that relisting may remove key state management tools for protecting livestock.  Cowboy State Daily
  • The Sheridan City Council approved a resolution Monday night to simplify the timeline and reduce redundant steps in policy documents for GPET funds—City Clerk Ashlee Foster said the update improves accountability while eligibility remains limited to non-profit and governmental organizations. The new process replaces the one adopted in 2020 and amended in 2023 and sets clearer expectations for both the City and funding recipients.  Sheridan Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sheridan County Weed and Pest Control District found West Nile virus in 7 mosquito pools even though no local humans, birds or other animals have been infected, while a horse in Johnson County tested positive. Local agencies will continue enhanced mosquito control efforts — including fogging and larvicide treatments — to reduce community risk.  City of Sheridan
