  • Sheridan businesses received startup grants from the Wyoming Regional Food Business Center’s Startup Business Builder program (launched in 2024) to help small and medium food producers grow their operations.  The Sheridan Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • On August 2nd, Fort Phil Kearny held its annual Wagon Box Anniversary Program at the Wagon Box Fight Site where site superintendent Shari Shada introduced Miniconjou Lakota historian Donovin Sprague, who explained the 1867 attack on soldiers and civilians by Sioux warriors. Sprague detailed how Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahos planned the engagement and Patti Wilson with Kyle Mediate demonstrated period weapons—adding historical context to the event.  Sheridan Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday night, August 4 — with two trustees joining via Zoom — the SCSD#2 Board of Trustees met as Superintendent Scott Stults outlined the back-to-school schedule for staff and new teachers ahead of students returning on August 26. The board held a public hearing on a concealed firearms policy, approved an amendment to exempt lockbox costs, and voted to remove one book from the library while moving another behind the librarian desk for students 17 and older, with a community member urging more recognition for support staff.  Sheridan Media
  • Sheridan College students earned national honors at the 2025 National Skills USA Competition—held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta—by winning top awards.  The Sheridan Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mark Gordon and law enforcement officials announced in Cheyenne Tuesday that the Helmsley Charitable Trust is granting nearly $2.4 million to equip officers with Virtual Crisis Care to handle mental health crises. The program gives officers tablets for 24/7 telehealth access to behavioral health experts — a model used in South Dakota and Nevada.  Sheridan Media
  • At Monday’s city council meeting on August 4th, the council approved consideration for the final plat of the Lindberg Minor Subdivision at 512 West 5th Street, where a developer plans to divide a 9,700 square-foot R2 zone into four residential lots. Public Works Director Hanns Mercer noted that the applicant will install sidewalks to address local safety concerns—this improvement is part of ongoing discussions about pedestrian access on city snow routes.  Sheridan Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recent CDC data shows Wyoming had 66.4 cases per 100,000 of reported foodborne illness last year—among the nation’s highest—while nearly one-third of cases occur in the summer months. Health officials warn Sheridan residents to take extra care with food safety at outdoor events as many infections are linked to E. coli.  Wyoming News Now
  • Sheridan County Weed and Pest Control District detected West Nile virus in 7 mosquito pools as part of testing 945 pools statewide, and no cases have been found in local people or other animals so far. A horse in Johnson County tested positive — officials will continue testing and increase mosquito control measures to lower the risk of further infections.  Sheridan Media
