COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sheridan County youth competed in the second annual mutton bustin’ contest at the fairgrounds on Aug. 2—sheep were heard baaing as local participants showed their skills.  The Sheridan Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Grant Gardner from Minnesota went missing on his three-day hike in the Cloud Peak Wilderness after he last contacted his wife on July 29 from the summit — his vehicle was found at the West Ten Sleep trailhead. Rescue teams from several counties are using helicopters, planes, and search dogs as they continue the search amid extreme weather — additional assets arrived Monday to aid the effort.  Sheridan Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sheridan author Abbie Johnson Taylor spoke on Public Pulse to talk about her new book Living Vicariously in Wyoming—her seventh book—and explained that the stories set in Wyoming show what it means to live vicariously as she plans to write more.  Sheridan Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Mark Gordon opened the Brook Mine near Sheridan — the state's first coal mine in 50 years and the first rare earth mine in 70 years — after tests revealed that its coal contains minerals used in wind turbines and military equipment. The mine received a 5-year permit and a $6.1 million grant supports a processing facility that will begin construction later this year.  Sheridan Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Sheridan College students earned national recognition when they qualified by winning gold medals in Wyoming this past April and competed at the SkillsUSA event at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Nolan Schaffer placed 5th in CNC Programming while Cole Schoenewald finished 10th in Photography—showing their skill and hard work.  Sheridan Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on its draft 2026 transportation improvement plan that lists highway, bridge, airport, transit, and public safety projects. The plan, open for comment until September 1, details projects in north-central Wyoming—such as replacing the Works Street bridge in Sheridan and repairing roads expected to be contracted starting October 1.  Sheridan Media
