- ➤ May is Small Business Month and local leaders say small businesses are vital to our community's strength; Sheridan Chamber of Commerce CEO Teresa Detimore urged residents to shop local, join loyalty clubs, and support local events (small businesses account for 99.9% of U.S. firms and provide many jobs). - ➤ AARP Wyoming will host a free drive-up paper shredding event on May 31 at Commercial True Value in Sheridan — an effort to help residents destroy sensitive documents securely. Residents may bring up to two large boxes of paper and must register in advance; the event runs from 8:30 a.m. — 11 a.m. Sheridan Media
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ SAGE Community Arts hosted a high school art gala in Sheridan that showcased sculptures of movie characters such as Spiderman and Jar Jar Binks and creative works like a book with mushrooms emerging from it—highlighting local high school talent. The Sheridan Press
- ➤ The SCLT Big Goose Natural Area will host the Unplug: Birds event on May 22 from 5-6 p.m. at 14 Lane Lane — attendees are encouraged to join the bird watching program. The Sheridan Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tongue River High School social studies teacher Steve Hanson, who has taught for 15 years, was named Teacher of the Year by Sheridan County School District 1 after setting clear goals for his career. The Sheridan Press
- ➤ At the SCSD#3 Board of Trustees meeting on May 14, the board named School Chef Aubrey Holland and art teacher Dawn Knudsvig as Employees of the Year while two high school seniors asked for a trip to New York City to learn about new cultures and earn college credit. The board also looked at a new budget, planned new classes for 7—12 grade students—talked about a counter offer on the Arvada School property, set high school graduation for May 18 at 1 p.m., and scheduled the next meeting for June 10. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Now that the weather is warmer, workers resumed removing asbestos from the old Acme Power Plant building on behalf of the Sheridan County Conservation District. Horsley Specialties Incorporated (of Rapid City) has removed over 1,000 bags of asbestos with about 70% of the work done and plans an emergency demolition (to fix the roof) with cleanup to finish by the end of June. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sheridan City Council will consider a one-year contract with IAFF Local #276 at Monday night’s meeting—negotiations with Mayor Rich Bridger, Councilors Terry Weitzel, Jack Wood and Steve Brantz went well on April 15th and May 6th. The Council will also receive a seasonal flood plan mitigation update, review a resolution on the Riverstone Park Phase Two final plat, and meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
