COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Compass Center for Families is calling for volunteers (with no courtroom experience required) to serve as advocates in the juvenile court system. The program needs local community members in Sheridan and Johnson counties to help secure safe, permanent homes for children.  Sheridan Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sheridan College will present the Bighorn Jazz Orchestra in a celebration of the Great American Songbook at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2 in Kinnison Hall at the Whitney Center, showcasing classic tunes by Benny Goodman, George Gershwin and Count Basie (with rising vocalist Julie Koenig making her Sheridan debut).  Sheridan Media
  • On April 28, the Alliance for Historic Wyoming recognized the Sheridan Community Land Trust with the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award for securing a preservation easement on the 1898 Stone House in Sheridan County. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wyoming farmers and ranchers face a perfect storm as supply disruptions push fertilizer prices up and severe drought cuts crop yields. They plan to shift to short-season crops and are coping with soaring hay prices — challenges expected to increase feed costs in the coming months.  Cowboy State Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 29, over 50 local businesses hosted the 2026 Sheridan Career Fair to offer Sheridan County students a chance to explore career options.  The Sheridan Press
  • About 20 locals joined a listening session on April 29 at Arvada-Clearmont School to discuss the new Profile of a Graduate. SCSD#3 officials said the school will focus on teaching communication skills now — with plans to add other tenets gradually for future graduation requirements.  Sheridan Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In February, a film tour held at WYO Theater raised $12,672 for stream restoration at the Big Goose Natural Area with 470 community members in attendance. In April, the group planted coyote willow cuttings along Big Goose Creek at 14 Lane Ln to stabilize banks (with cottonwood plantings planned later).  City of Sheridan
  • A rockslide last week closed part of the Tongue River Canyon Trail, but staff at Wyoming Game and Fish Department + Bighorn National Forest are planning to reopen the trail once debris is cleared; the trailhead and downstream access remain open.  City of Sheridan
  • Sheridan County Weed and Pest District will host a meeting from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the Clearmont Fire Hall (1245 Front St.) to share programs and resources for managing leafy spurge.  Sheridan Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local groups in Sheridan received grant funds through the Wyoming Forward Contract Grant Program by the DFS and Food Works Group to boost food security; the funding helps 24 organizations work on stronger food access in our community.  The Sheridan Press
