Good morning, Sheridan. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 28th of April.

CULTURE NEWS

  • George Ostrom was a pioneer artist remembered in Sheridan for creating the bucking horse logo and leaving behind hidden drawings that capture scenes from World War I and Wyoming wildlife—an artistic legacy his family is now sharing on a new website. The Sheridan Community Land Trust will host a tribute event later this month during their Explore History series to honor his work.  Cowboy State Daily
  • Museum Director Sylvia Bruner will discuss her new book 'The Wyoming Bomber Crash of 1943' today at 6:30 p.m. at the Carriage House during the Johnson County Historical Society’s meeting—she will review how 41 heavy bombers were lost in June, including a B-17 with 10 young men found two years later, and offer a look at the updated Bomber Mountain exhibit if time permits.  Sheridan Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Alaska Volcano Observatory is monitoring Mount Spurr on Yellow Alert as it shows increased earthquake activity near Anchorage. Experts say a similar eruption to 1992 could send an ash cloud that may affect air travel in the Lower 48 — though Wyoming is not expected to see heavy ashfall.  Cowboy State Daily
  • Nearly 60 guests attended the Bighorn Audubon Society bird walk at Ucross Foundation on April 26, where they observed spring migration including geese, mallards, and a rare common crane in Dayton; guide Joann Pucket said the 1.5-mile loop offered birdwatchers a clear view of varied habitats in wetlands+grasslands.  Sheridan Media
  • Sheridan County Weed and Pest Control District announced two upcoming meetings on leafy spurge management—one meeting is set at the Clearmont Fire Hall on Tuesday, April 29th at 1:00 p.m. and the other is scheduled at the UW Research and Extension Center at 1090 Dome Loop on Wednesday, May 7th.  Sheridan Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sheridan County Emergency Management warns that heavy rain which began Sunday night and will continue today may lead to flash flooding and rapid snowmelt in wildfire burn-scar areas—residents in at-risk zones are advised to use free sandbags from self-fill sites for residential use.  City of Sheridan
