COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Sheridan has seen major floods as rising snow melt and ice jams caused creeks to overflow — records note severe events in 1899, 1924, and 1923. The US Army Corps of Engineers began flood control in 1963, and officials continue to monitor the creeks to keep residents safe. City of Sheridan
- ➤ The Hub on Smith will host a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday, April 22 from 7 to 9 a.m. to honor community volunteers who assist older adults with meals, transportation and social programs throughout Sheridan County. Sheridan Media
- ➤ Four Sheridan Vietnam-era veterans are honored this week with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. through AARP's Wish of a Lifetime — they join 11 other veterans from across Wyoming. The Sheridan Press

- ➤ Sheridan College Theater presents The Lightest Element, a historical drama about astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin’s pioneering work and struggles in a field led by men. The play runs on Sophie’s Stage at the WYO Theater 7 p.m. Friday, April 17 and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18. Sheridan Media
- ➤ This summer, the Big Horn City Historical Society will dedicate a plaque at the French Pete Site near Banner on Friday, July 17 to mark the historic event involving trader French Pete (Louis Gazous) and helpers, aiming to honor the site's past and spark interest in local history. - ➤ The Sheridan Community Land Trust’s SCLT Explore History program will host local historian Cynde Georgen for two presentations on early true crime stories in Sheridan County. Check local listings for session times and locations. The Sheridan Press

- ➤ Sheridan County Emergency Management, with the University of Wyoming Extension Office and National Weather Service, will offer free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training at Sheridan College, Watt Agriculture Building (1090 Dome Loop), Room 131 on Thursday, Apr. 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.; participants learn to identify and report severe weather. - ➤ Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Domingez and Under-sheriff Lt. Doug Sanders warned drivers to take extra care as mild weather brought more pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists out earlier than usual - they recommended drivers heading into the mountains share their travel plans for safety. - ➤ This April, the Wyoming Children’s Trust Fund, Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming, and the Wyoming Department of Family Services launch Pinwheels of Possibility + an initiative aimed at strengthening families and communities to prevent abuse. The Sheridan Press
